Tim had learned to set type and print  when the Sandcastle Press was started on November 5, 1991 using a hand operated "label" proof press.

Jenny, Chimene, Daedra and Kyle all learned to print.

Hilltop Hobbies Press becomes Sandcastle PressThe Chandler & Price traveled to Oregon in June 1991 and became part of Sandcastle Press.

Doug and his friend Keith bolted and strapped it onto Keith's family farm trailer and pulled it up Interstate 5 using his Ford Bronco.  It took about 14 hours to make the drive from Los Altos Hills, California to Junction City, Oregon.  The press first went to Keith's garage and the next weekend was was brought to Gresham to be unloaded into Doug's printshop.  The first Sandcastle Press piece was printed in Gresham over the 4th of July weekend, 1992.  The piece was an 8 1/2" x 11 " Thank You" note to George.

In 1994 George and Louise visited Oregon to print their Christmas cards on the Sandcastle Press.  Note the aprons with the two press names --  "Hilltop Hobbies Press" and "Sandcastle Press".

In 2009, Doug renamed his printing endeavor The Sandcastle LetterPress to better reflect the public's understanding of  "letterpress" printing.   He shares a printing space in a warehouse in Southeast Portland.
